It's not clear yet if a new actor will be cast for the part.
After losing a key cast member midway through filming, Wednesday season two has experienced production issues.
The Netflix series, which features Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, was quickly given a second season renewal after becoming one of the most popular shows on the streaming service.
Due to ongoing strikes in Hollywood, production on the second season has been put on hold. However, the news that Thora Birch, who had joined the show as a new series regular, had to leave before finishing her parts has dealt a further blow to the program.
"Thora has returned to the States to attend to a personal matter and will not be returning to the production," an MGM official informed Deadline, referring to the production company behind the show.
Birch had to return home to take care of a family member's illness, according to others who spoke with the publication. It's also acknowledged that she "finished filming the bulk" of the role even if she didn't finish recording her portions. Birch will portray Tamara Novak, Wednesday's dorm mother, in season two.
Birch may yet have her role recast, therefore it's not yet known if her scenes will truly appear in the program. In any event, it has been stated that in order to wrap out her plot, producers will have to introduce a new character.
Alongside Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán—who portray Morticia and Gomez Addams, respectively—return for season two.
NME gave the first season a four-star rating, saying that the main character is kept intact and that it is a reinvention rather than a retelling. Jenna Ortega, who is well cast, makes superb use of Wednesday's sharp wit and sassy putdowns. Wednesday becomes an uncommon success story for a spin-off. It's eerie, strange, enigmatic, and spooky—a delightful experience indeed.
