Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives stage demo in Kumasi

Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives are baring their teeth at government over delays in releasing their financial clearance and subsequent permanent posting.

After completing their education at nursing and midwifery schools around the nation, health professionals need four years to put their theoretical knowledge into practice.

There is a clear gap and scarcity of human resources in the health industry since many health personnel are fleeing Ghana in search of better opportunities elsewhere.

More than 6,000 of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association's members departed between August 2023 and March 2024, according to association records.

Some nurses and midwives who are prepared to serve and are awaiting posting have not received financial clearance since 2020, while the nation is still in shock from this upset.

The newly graduated unemployed nurses and midwives, fed up with broken promises, mounted a demonstration in Kumasi to draw attention to their issues.

"We're sick of staying at home. We are pleading with the government to hire us right away because we are starving. Ibrahim Haruna, the president of the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association, expressed his ire, saying, "If the government cannot employ us, they should let us know so we find another thing doing."

For us, life has been unbearable. Adwoa Serwaa, a furious unemployed nurse, said, "We've had enough and we are pleading with the government to post us to contribute to the healthcare delivery in the country."

After passing through a few Kumasi streets, the group marched from the Cultural Center to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, where they delivered a petition to the Regional Minister.

The unemployed graduate nurses and midwives intend to persist in their protest until they receive employment.

"We are heading to Accra from here. Until we receive approval, we will sleep at the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Health while carrying our mats, Ibrahim declared.
