Public Reactions to MTN Ghana's New MoMo-to-Bank Transfer Fees

Following MTN Ghana's announcement of additional fees for transfers from MoMo wallets to bank accounts, mobile money users throughout Ghana are responding. A 0.75% cost per transaction, up to GH¢5, will be applied under the new pricing structure, which is anticipated to go into effect on June 1, 2026.

Online discussions have been sparked by the statement, with some users wondering if the new fee is similar to the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) that was previously eliminated. Others want to know if regulatory permission is necessary for such cost increases and how they would impact regular consumers and companies that use mobile money services extensively.

According to MTN Ghana, the change is meant to promote ongoing customer experience advancements and service improvements. The company claims that the updated fees will enable it to continue providing consumers with greater services, according to letters emailed to clients.

Millions of Ghanaians use Mobile Money for everyday transactions, savings, commercial operations, and account transfers, making it one of the most popular digital payment systems in the country. Because there are so many users engaged, any increases in transaction prices frequently garner a lot of public attention.

As talks continue, many users are awaiting additional clarification from stakeholders and regulatory agencies on the impact of the new levies.
